Designed With You, Not For You: How a Custom Piece Comes to Life

A custom piece sounds like something reserved for people who already know exactly what they want. It is not. Most of those who commission something with us arrive with little more than a feeling. Here is how we turn that into something real.

It starts with a conversation

Before any sketching, we talk. About the person it is for, how they live, what they gravitate toward, and what they would never wear. Sometimes there is an heirloom to reimagine or a stone with a history. Often there is just an idea and a lot of uncertainty. That is a perfectly good place to begin.

From sketch to design

From that conversation we develop sketches and, where it helps, a detailed rendering so you can see the piece before it exists. This is where your input matters most. Nothing is committed until the design feels right to you. Adjusting a curve, a proportion, the way a stone sits, that is the part where a piece becomes yours rather than ours.

The making

Once the design is settled, our craftsmen bring it into the world by hand in our Whistler atelier. Stones are set, metal is shaped and finished, and the piece is checked at every stage. This is unhurried work, because the difference between good and exceptional lives in details that cannot be rushed.

What to expect on timing

A custom commission typically takes several weeks from first conversation to finished piece, depending on complexity and stone sourcing. If you are working toward a proposal or an anniversary, tell us the date early and we will build the timeline around it. The one thing we will not do is rush the making to the point of compromising it.
