The tradition of wearing a ring as a symbol of devotion and commitment has roots in ancient Egypt and Rome. They believed that the "vena amoris", the vein of love, on the third finger of the left hand led straight to one's heart, thus this finger is connected to love and marriage.

These betrothal or "truth" rings were simple designs made first in iron, then gold, and their circular shape represented promise and dedication to the future. In the Middle Ages, wedding rings were inscribed with love messages- a practise we continue to this day.

The earliest mention of a diamond being placed in an engagement ring is attributed to Archduke Maximilian of Hamburg when he gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond betrothal ring in 1477. Three hundred years later, King George III presented a second diamond band to Queen Charlotte that started the wedding and anniversary band trend.

With the discovery of diamonds in the Kimberly region of South Africa in 1870 increasing the world's supply, this made the giving of a diamond ring more affordable to everyone.
