From the beginning...

Charms in one form or another have existed since the New Stone Age when early man spotted a natural gem or rock or piece of wood and carried it around as a talisman to guard against his enemies. Ancient Egyptians added these amulets to bracelets and necklaces as a form of identification to aid the gods in guiding them to their proper place in the afterlife.

During the middle Ages, knights wore charms on their belts to symbolize their profession, family origin or political affiliation. In modern times, Queen Victoria is said to have started a fashion trend by wearing bracelets with charms that held photos of loved ones in lockets.

The idea of collecting "travel" charms as souvenirs grew during WW1 and WW11 as returning soldiers brought home local charms for their wives and girlfriends. Then in the 1950's, giving this timeless keepsake marked important occasions such as birthdays, graduation and weddings where each charm symbolized the wearer's hobbies and interests.
