Canada's Own Iridescent Gemstone!
Discovered near Lethbridge, southern Alberta, this dazzling
gemstone
is actually a fossilized nautilus-like sea creature that became
extinct around the same time as the dinosaurs- 70 million years
ago. Ammolite is one of several gemstones (the others being amber
and pearl) that come from living organisms. Also known as ammonite,
it derives its name from the close similarity in shape to the
ram-like horns of the Egyptian god of life and reproduction,
Ammon.
Ammolite's dramatic
opal-like colour is the result of light interference within the
thin layers of the ammonite shell. Reds and greens are the most
common colours while specimens displaying blues and purples account
for only 5% of production and are considered more valuable and
collectible. Each piece is graded from AA to A- depending on the
overall brilliance, sharpness and number of colours.
A Truly Rare & Unique Gemstone
Although ammonite fossils are have been discovered
on every continent, this characteristic brilliant display is found
only in western Canada, thus making it a truly rare and unique
Canadian gemstone!
Discovered in 1981, gemmologists now believe that the supply of the highest quality ammolite will soon be exhausted. To protect the beauty of the gemstone, it is often capped with a piece of clear spinel or quartz.
Life Time Warranty / Certificate of Authenticity
Each
piece of ammolite jewellery purchased at keir fine jewellery comes
with a limited lifetime warranty and a Certificate of Authenticity
from Korite International. Keep this treasure clean by wiping it
