Diamonds with a Difference

Canadian DiamondsCanadian diamonds are "conflict-free" which means you can purchase your diamonds with the reassurance that your purchase meets the highest ethical standards regarding production and delivery.

As compared to diamonds that have been unearthed in Africa, India, Australia and Russia for hundreds of years, Canadian diamond mining is a very recent adventure. Since they were first discovered in the 1990's, several mines have begun commercial operations in Canada's North West Territories, roughly 300 kilometres north of the capital city, Yellowknife.

the World's third largest diamond PRODUCER

The northernmost mine, Ekati, was the first to open in 1998 and now produces an average of 3 million carats of rough diamonds per year. Located 20 kilometres southeast of Ekati, the Diavik mine (opened in 2001) is built above kimberlite pipes that lie directly beneath the shallow Lac de Gras. Snap Lake, De Beer's first mine outside of Africa, is Canada's only completely underground diamond mine. In recent years, Canada has become the third largest producer of diamonds in the world: just slightly behind Botswana and Russia.

Commitment to community & environment

Because of their remote locations, travel to these mines is done mainly by aircraft except for 6-8 weeks of the year when an ice road, the width of a football stadium, is built over the surrounding lakes and portages. During February and March, the Ice Road Truckers haul thousands of tons of heavy equipment and supplies to the mines. All the mining companies are committed to employing and training Aboriginal workers from nearby communities and are obligated by the government to maintain the highest environmental practises possible.

Laser Inscribed Polar Ice Diamonds

Logo Polar IceEach Polar Bear and Polar Ice diamond is laser inscribed with a unique serial number on the girdle of the diamond along with Canadian iconic symbols such as a bear or maple leaf.

This number is traceable to the specific mine where the gemstone was "born"; thus providing a positive identification and unimpeachable pedigree ensuring that the diamond was mined in Canada and is therefore conflict free.

Certificate of Authenticity

With each purchase of a Polar Ice diamond, you receive a Certificate of Authenticity and an independent retail replacement appraisal.

The appraisal lists the specifications of the diamond, such as carat weight, colour, clarity and cut and is accompanied by a photo of the jewellery item and serial number etched on the diamond.
